FTPS

MLADU supports FTPS. Our service can safely, securely, and seamlessly integrate with FTPS servers for data transfers. FTPS stands for File Transfer Protocol Secure. It is a secure network protocol used to transfer files between systems over a secure connection.

What is FTPS?

FTPS, or File Transfer Protocol Secure, is an extension of the traditional FTP (File Transfer Protocol) that adds a critical layer of security through the use of SSL/TLS encryption. Introduced in the late 1990s as organizations grew increasingly concerned about data privacy over the internet, FTPS was designed to protect sensitive information during transmission by encrypting both authentication credentials and data payloads. Unlike its unsecured predecessor, which transmitted data in plain text, FTPS significantly improved data security by leveraging the same trusted encryption protocols used to secure websites and online financial transactions.

While FTPS introduced much-needed security enhancements to an aging protocol, it still comes with notable limitations in today's highly complex and interconnected digital landscape. FTPS can indeed be secure when properly configured with strong encryption ciphers, strict certificate validation, and well-maintained firewalls. However, it requires careful setup and ongoing management to avoid common pitfalls such as expired certificates, weak encryption standards, or misconfigured network settings. Additionally, FTPS struggles with modern firewall and NAT environments because of its reliance on multiple port ranges for data channels, often resulting in failed transfers or complex network adjustments.

FTPS Data Transfer Requirements

To successfully establish a secure and seamless FTPS connection with MLADU, the following items will need to be in place:

First, you'll need an FTPS server that can accept secure connections over the public internet, protected by SSL /TLS protocols. This server should be accessible via a publicly resolvable URL or hostname, allowing our systems to locate and communicate with it efficiently. Additionally, please ensure that the necessary network ports—typically TCP port 22—are open and accessible for the connection.

We'll also require a dedicated username and password for MLADU to authenticate with your FTPS server. This account should have the appropriate permissions to read and/or deposit files within the designated directories. To support a smooth transfer process, please review any firewall or proxy settings to ensure that traffic from MLADU is permitted.

Finally, we kindly ask that you provide at least one technical contact. This will allow our MLADU concierge specialists to reach out directly should any questions arise or if assistance is needed to resolve an issue promptly. With these items in place, our team can deliver a highly secure, reliable, and fully managed data transfer experience tailored to your needs.

Managed File Transfer Services Are Better Than Just FTPS

In contrast, modern managed file transfer (MFT) solutions like MLADU go far beyond the basic capabilities of FTPS. MLADU is built to handle not only traditional file transfers but also the complex requirements of today's cloud-first and globally distributed enterprises. Our platform supports a broad range of transfer protocols—including FTPS, SFTP, HTTPS—as well as seamless integrations with leading cloud platforms like AWS and Azure and popular SaaS solutions such as Dropbox. Whether you're moving data between business units, across international borders, or between cloud-native applications, MLADU provides a unified, secure, and fully managed environment that ensures your data reaches its destination quickly and safely.
